Мне всегда нравилось работать с людьми, поэтому еще в школе я определила для себя эту стезю. Это, действительно, очень интересно понять внутренние ценности человека, его стремления, цели. Понимание людей есть ключ к достижению эффективности их работы. Далее…

Interview with Mr. Timothy Gibson

Mr. Timothy Gibson, Country Director and EPD Programs Manager of IREX Kazakhstan (International Research and Exchanges Board), the US non-government organization that currently administers Edmund Muskie Graduate Fellowship and Freedom Support Act Undergraduate Exchange Programs kindly agreed to give an interview.

Muskie and UGRAD fellowship exchange programs are both more than 10 years old and they have been administered in Kazakhstan the entire time since those programs began (in the past by ACCELS, US non-government organization before).

An average pool of applicants from Kazakhstan is about 200–250 people each year for UGRAD program and around the same number for Edmund Muskie Scholarship. Each year there are about 12 or 13 finalists for each program.

Looking at the strict selection process is one key indicator that Muskie and UGRAD scholarships are both top notch programs. Applicants must write essays, get recommendation letters, and then if they are chosen to be semifinalists they must take the TOEFL and possibly the GRE or GMAT as well as do an interview with a three person panel. On top of this the fact is that for each program all costs are paid by the program means that it is very valuable indeed if you add up the costs of travel to the United States, tuition and fees while at a university in the United States and all associated costs.

There is no ideal candidate in terms of age, gender or identity. An ideal candidate would be someone who wants to be a leader in their community in Kazakhstan, has a proven record of achievement both academically and professionally and eager to help create positive change in Kazakhstan.

There is no easy answer to whether Personal Statement is the most important in an application. Each part of the application is important in the sense that it needs to provide a full and clear picture of the qualities (and challenges) of the candidate. The easiest method of getting this information across might be an essay but it is not the only way.

I would say the most common mistake is including useless information about personal hobbies or experiences that the candidates does not then use to show a good quality about themselves. You need to use each thing you include in an application to show something positive about your character.
